About us

In the heart of the old town, our restaurant since 1997.

In the middle of Winterthur's old town, on the corner of Obergasse and Schulgasse, we, Karin and Daniel Hunold, have run Restaurant Obergass since 1997. Over more than two decades, we have turned a tradition-rich old-town tavern into a meeting place where regulars, food lovers and curious visitors all feel at home.

What sets us apart is uncomplicated, honest cooking, seasonal in spirit, carefully prepared and served at fair prices. Our classics, cordon bleu, Wiener schnitzel or beef fillet «Stroganoff», have built a loyal following over the years. Alongside, a curated wine list awarded two glasses by Swiss Wine Gourmet.

History

A house with nearly 500 years of history.

The house in which we cook and welcome guests every day is itself a piece of Winterthur history.

Timeline
  1. 1534

    A house on the corner

First mention of a house owned by the tubmaker Conrad Sporrer. Later passed to the parish priest of Wülflingen.

  2. before 1755

    Today's corner house is built

The three-storey corner house at Obergasse / Schulgasse 1 is built.

  3. around 1800

    One floor more

Behind the characteristic mansard roof, a fourth full storey is added.

  4. 1809

    Neueck

The house is given the name older Winterthurers still remember.

  5. 1875

    The great rebuild

During a major renovation, the entrance is moved to Obergasse.

  6. 1960s

    Tour de Suisse

The restaurant is now called «Tour de Suisse», or just «Suisse». The host is Karl Litschi (1912–1999), a Swiss sporting legend: in 1937 the first Swiss winner of the Tour de Suisse, the same year Swiss cyclo-cross champion, road champion in 1941. At «Suisse» he welcomed guests from sport, city and neighbourhood, the tavern was a meeting place for an entire generation.

  7. 19 June 1983

    Saved by public vote

The French department store group Maus frères planned a large project here, the protected row of houses at Schulgasse 1 / Obergasse 7–13 would have had to give way. After planning hurdles, the company withdrew. In the end the people decided: 16,981 Winterthur voters said yes against 9,476 no to the city buying the buildings for a flat 3.7 million francs. The old-town houses were saved.

  8. 1997

Karin and Daniel Hunold take over

We take over Restaurant Obergass as tenants of the City of Winterthur: first as «Restaurant Obergass Müntener & Hunold», since 2001 in our own name.

  9. Today

    Keepers of a heritage

A true old-town gem, of which few remain in Winterthur. Polished, but not stiff. Modern in the kitchen, mindful of tradition in spirit. Anyone stopping in today sits in a house with nearly 500 years of history, and in a place that has done what it does best for generations: bring people together.

Much has happened here. You are the next guest.
